This is one of my all time favorite art projects to do with kids because of the flexibility of the project.
I always announce plans for our next class at the end of each class so the child has an entire week to think about what he/she will want to do at the next class.
The ‘Kids Book’ themed class is always a favorite because the child gets to share his or her favorite books and why and this opens up a great opportunity for them to get to know one another better.
Instructions:
-Pick a theme. Ours was ‘animal themed books’.
-Pick a book
-Have each child draw on paper his or her ideas of what she will do and it gives them a reference once they begin to sketch the design onto canvas to minimize erasing errors on the canvas.
-Sketch the design ‘lightly’ onto canvas. At this point the child can begin to paint with acrylic paint. Sometimes I ask the child to outline in black depending on skill level so the child stays within the parameters of what he/she is painting.
-Have the child paint the background first.
-Paint the subject
